Georgia is the country of the Western Asia having an output to the World ocean through Black sea. Length of sea coast is 310 km. The general length of overland boundaries is 1461 km. The longest border runs in the north on ridges of the Big Caucasus, — with Russia. From the east Georgia borders on Azerbaijan, in the south on Armenia and Turkey. From VI century B. C. Georgia was a colony Ionic Greeks: its western region referred to Colchis, east — Iberia. In IV century B. C. Georgia has been incorporated in one kingdom. In IV century A.D. the Christianity has come to the country. In VII century the country was won by Arabs, and in XI — Turks. King of Georgia David II has expelled the Turk and has restored independence in XII century. However in ХIII century Georgia was won by Mongols, and later it has got under authority of Iran and Ottoman Empire. In the middle of XVIII century the Georgian empire which in 1801 was a part of Russian empire has been proclaimed. In 1918 Georgia again has found independence, in 1922 Georgia together with Armenia and Azerbaijan was a part of Transcaucasian SFSR, and in 1936 became union republic in structure of the USSR. In April, 1991 Georgia has proclaimed independence. The country is a member of the United Nations and the CIS. State system is: The head of the state is the President selected for 5 years.
The maximum legislature is the unicameral Supreme body (Parliament).
Executive authority is carried out by the government — the cabinet headed by the Prime Minister. |
